(It’s actually Antonio Banderas, gamely handling a no-duh “SpongeBob” primer.) Taking full advantage of the big-screen showcase, the movie then segues to a sweeping comic sequence of SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) and Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke) fending off a militarized attack on the Krusty Krab by recipe-coveting Plankton (Mr. A live-action framing sequence introduces crusty buccaneer Burger Beard, a character that some fans, to their amusement, might fleetingly mistake for recurring series host Patchy the Pirate. The characters don’t come ashore for their makeover until the last act, and once they do, the animators just coast on visual novelty.
What’s more, the gimmick being used to sell the movie - seeing SpongeBob and the gang rendered in 3-D animation, and dropped into a live-action setting - is mostly hype. What we get from the cartoon’s longtime showrunner, Paul Tibbitt, and his crew is something with a largely dashed-off feel, as narratively doodled as onetime Sponge-nemesis DoodleBob.
